Gratitude without entitlement produces humility, not pride. A person's intelligence is not earned. Their birthplace is not earned. Their looks are not earned. Their opportunities are ultimately not earned. Absurdly, everything is ultimately blind nature nurture determinism. The intellectually honest recognition of this dissolves ego, and softens survivor's guilt into stewardship. I carry my privileges not as a badge to show off, but as a responsibility to not waste the rare, ultimately unearned clarity I experience.
